Freemasonry begins with the personal improvement of every member. Put simply, the goal of Freemasonry is to "Take Good Men and Make Them Better". It is open to men regardless of race, religion, nationality, or social standing. From this nonspecific goal, precise requirements are drawn for applicants.

Any Applicant Must:
• Be a man of legal age (18 in Virginia)
• Believe in a Supreme Being
• Be of good character and sound morals
• Apply of his own Free Will and Accord

These requirements deserve some explanation

A belief in a Supreme Being is required; no specifics of religion or form of worship are necessary. Freemasonry is not a religion, nor a substitute for religion, but rather focuses on a shared belief in a Supreme Being to bring good men of different faiths, as well as backgrounds and opinions, together in fraternal harmony.

The intended goal of "Making Good Men Better" presupposes the need to start with a man of conscience and good character. All applicants must not have been convicted of a felony, and are required to undergo a background check during the application process. Further, a man's character is revealed by the people who have known him. As a result, applicants submit a list of character references to be contacted by the Lodge.

While all Masons profit from being Masons, that profit is personal, not material. The goal of self improvement, the ability to meet and interact with other men of quality and good character, and the desire to give back to the community are what drive men to apply for membership. Application of one's own free will and accord, free from all other motives, is required of every man who wishes to become a Mason.
